digital divide

The least digitally developed countries according to the ITU are Guinea Biseau, Chad, Mali, Burkino Fass, and Niger.

These countries are third world countries which do not get much electricity and do not have gadgets or any technology we have.

These countires are very poor and cannot afford to spend money on making themselves up to date with technology.

they also have very small population, and can survive without needing to use technology so there is no need to have it.

society and the individual

We need society in our lives, without it we would find it difficult to live, but we don't need society all the time, society helps people in need and not everyone is in need all the time. if society looked after us constantly it would begin to control everything we do and individuality would not exist as everyone would be doing the same thing.

Monitoring internet and email use

in an estate agents there are many advantages in being able to moniter your emplyees, you can see how much emplyees are speding of company money and if they are doing anything illegal to do with the company, the company can see if they are doing what they should be doing and not playing games, they can also most importantly see if they are trading any private information about the company to other people.
i think that this is an invasion of privacy and that people should nto be able to read other people emails as they can hold private things and sometimes passwords and user names for websites, this means that if someone gets hold of this information they could use the information to access people websites and websites they have signed up to.

GPS tracking system

Parents are able to track there children when they are driving around, they can see where they are going and what speed they are going at, this ensures that the parent can always know where the teen driver is and means that they can always find them. they can warn them if they are going too fast or they can punish them for going too fast.
The problem i see with this is that it is taking away the teenagers privacy. Teenagers do not want their parents looking over them the whole time they are driving. A good thing is that it could make the teenagers drive better and cause less accidents, teenagers will not mess about whilst they are driving if they are being watched.

US Passports RFID

RFID are Radio Frequency ID chips. America is planning to place them into american passports so that when they are at airports customs can scan their passports from a near distance using special radio recievers.
However there is a problem that might occur, if customs are scanign the cards they will be able to see a lot of information about the persons identity. this could spark up a lot of crime as people might be able to get the technology that the custom officers use and could steal information from peoples passports.

Pro's and con's of ID cards

The UK ID cards run off of database files. This stores all the fingerprint ID's of all UK citizens. This is just incase a person loses their ID card.

The ID card is used to provide information about the card holder, eg. criminal record, exam grades and other things. It will provide an easy way of locating people and will help identifying people.

it is a good idea but not everyone will want to have all there information on a card which they could lose and they do not want there information on a database which could be hacked.

My grandmother does not need a phone that can take pictures or anything fancy, she wants a very cheap phone. she only needs to amke and recieve calls so i found a perfect phone that fits her requirements.
http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/pay-as-you-go/alcatel/ote227-red/
the Alcatel OTE227 red is only £9.95 when bought with £10 airtime balence it has a colour screen and a vibrating alert so if she cant hear the ringtone she can feel the vibration. it costs a measly 15p a minute to phone people and only 10p for each text.

impact of games players

Computer games are very popular because they offer hundreds of hours of fun, you can play as people and become them. it makes the player feel like they are actually in the game because they control what ever the character does. you can become anything you want from being a dragon slayer to being a vet, there is a huge ammount of freedom and new games a re coming out each week to satisfy every players needs. Games allow people to leave their lives and live a fantasy life.
Some people blame computer games for the increase in violence, me personally play a lot of violent games and i am not a violent person, computer games have not influenced my personallity and have not changed me in anyway. i play computer games when i am bored and want to play with my mates on a game.
Computer games have not made me isolated, if anything they have made me more outgoing and have helped me make more friends, i can talk to people about games and i play with people on xbox live and talk to them over it. i socialise with everyone i play with and make new friends from all over the world. it has increased my social life a lot.

pirated entertainment

Apple sells music downloads on their site; they are a legal download site where you have to pay for music downloads. There are many advantages to downloading music from a legal source, you will always get a good copy of the song you want unlike if you were to download a song from an illegal source it might be bad quality or might even be a different song. Also you can get fined or even jailed for having music on your computer that you haven’t paid for. If you download something illegally it is the same as stealing something as the maker of the thing you downloaded does not get paid for it.

Some people choose to buy pirate DVDs from market stalls for cheap prices, the DVDs that are sold on market stalls are usually very bad quality; It is also illegal to buy pirate DVDs from anyone and you could end up with a fine if you are caught buying them.

People can download films off the internet that are not even out in the cinemas yet they are normally filmed from the back of cinemas and sometimes even have people standing up in the middle of the film. They are bad copies and have a very bad picture it is not worth watching these films because you would lose out on all of the quality the film has.

Reliable information

There a lot of hoax websites on the internet, soem are very easy to recognise as they are not proffesional at all and look like a 12 year old has designed it. for example on this site :" http://www.sudftw.com/jackcon.htm " it talks about an animal called a Jackalope, the picture is clearly a picture of a Rabbit with antlers. it has many pictures from famous events where the Jackalope has clearly been just copied and pasted in. The information on these hoax sites are usually outragous and have clearly been made up. only a 5 year old would believe that there are killer bunnies that have antlers.
A hoax website is very easy to notice just from looking at how proffesional it is. if it doesn't look proffesional then look for a more reliable website.

Business communications

There are several methods of business communication, including:
Web-based communication - for better and improved communication, anytime anywhere.

e-mails - which provide an instantaneous medium of written communication worldwide.

Reports - important in documenting the activities of any department

Presentations - very popular method of communication in all types of organizations, usually involving audiovisual material, like copies of reports, or material prepared in Microsoft PowerPoint or Adobe Flash

telephoned meetings - which allow for long distance speech.

forum boards - which allow people to instantly post information at a centralized location.

face to face meetings - which are personal and should be succeeded by a written followup.

Evaluation of my communication

Instant messenger: I use instant messenger a lot to keep in touch with my friends, it is easy to use and you only need to click on a window and type to get a reply. this is the main way i keep in touch with friends because all of them have instant messenger and it is free to use.

E-mail: I do not keep in touch with people using e-mail, i havn't sent an e-mail to my friends before because none of them read them, i dont read my e-mails because all the e-mails i get are junk mail which i just delete.

SMS: i send a lot of texts to people but i dont use this as much as Instant messenger. I only text people when i am out or if they are not online, it costs too much to phone people so i just text or ask my friends to phone me if they have a lot of free minutes.

When do you use mobile phones?

I use my mobile phone to keep in touch with people and sort out what is happening over the week. My mobile phone also has games on it which i can play when i am bored, it also has a 3.2 megapixel camera on it so i can take pictures of things and keep good memories on my phone. I use my phone everyday and always have it on me, my friends can keep i touch with me at all times if there is anything happening my friends phone me to tell me and ask if i am going out. My mum can also check up on me if she wants to and phone me when she needs help with anything. the main disadvantage in using a mobile phone is that it costs a lot, to phone people it costs me 20p a minute and each text costs me 3p, this isn't too bad because i do not phone people regularly i only text people really. i bought my mobile phone to keep in touch with people and thats what it does so it does fill its intended purpose.

When do you use E-mail?

e-mail is the most frequently used service on the Internet, it is an easy way to keep in touch with friends and family. it is also a great way to share information with people who you work with or just people who you like. the main reason e-mails are used is because you can send an e-mail anywhere at any time and it can be read by the recipient at his/her convienience. E-mail is fast, usually taking no more than a few minutes to be received which is much quicker than writing a leeter and sending it off. you can also send a single e-mail to multiple recipients.
E-mail is not used as much as it could because a lot of people use instant messenger which allows people to have a conversation on the internet instantly. instant messenger also has a feature that allows you to type something to someone who is offline, when the person signs in they will recieve the message. this is a lot easier than sending an e-mail and is by far the newer technology.

Digital Communication vs Voice Communication

digital communication has risen over the last couple of years, people text and e-mail their friends many times a day. it is quick and easy and can be done while you are doing other tasks.

voice communication is not used as much because it means you have to be either with the person or on the phone to them which means you have to concentrate on talking and cannot do another task at the same time.

good old days

Small businesses could use Microsoft Edexcel, and microsoft Access instead of using paper based systems. Edexcel is a very easy way to store information and work out formula very quickly, you can work out any sum you want that involves your numbers. Access is a great way to control databases and keep track of anything you want, it is much more reliable than a person and does not make mistakes.

Both of these programs would be much more efficiant than a person. but the programs still need people to work them so people who were great at typing like secretaries and typists would be able to get jobs which payed greater and meant they did less work.

Paper based systems are not used anymore for a reason, they are very time consuming and people can not be bothered to write anymore. oen advantage is that it can not get a virus which could lose all your documents.

Ambulance

ICT has had a huge impact on ambulance services. Ambulances can arrive very quickly to situations and have no trouble getting pedestrians to move, the equipment they use is very efficiant and saves a lot of lives. before the It equipment was around many people did not have time to get to the hospital so would sometimes just die on the way in the ambulance because they could not treat them there.

One of the main disadvantages is that the ambulances will need a lot of power to keep all the electrical equipment running, if the power failed all the equipment would fail, and the ambulance would be useless. However the IT in the ambulance can tell if the power is low and can prevent a problem arrising.

Tool man

There are many new technologies which could save john time and money:

PDA: A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a hand held computer, you can enter information and store it on a memory stick, Software typically required to be a PDA includes an appointment calendar, a to-do list, an address book for contacts and some sort of note program. this will mean John will not need to carry around his address book or diary.

GPS: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a system that can pinpoint your location and tell you how to get somewhere and what the quickest route is. This would help john find his clients and will mean he does not have to spend time looking through his big road map book.

Laptop: Laptops are a very cheap way to store and see information, John could put all of his catolouges onto his laptop and not have to carry around a lot of books he could do all the price lists and order forms on a laptop and store it in a safe place where it could not be seen by anyone else.

Software: There is a lot of software out that allows people to manage their work issues, John spends 6 hours a week keeping track of all his sales and his administration. There is software which allows you to just input data and does all the rest for you, this would make John's life a lot easier and would save him a lot of time.

Mobile Phone: A mobile phone is a great way to keep in touch with clients, if john had a mobile phone he would not need to carry around loads of change and would not need to find a pay phone to phone people, also he would be able to recieve calls if anything happens and his client cant make it.

Internet: The internet is a great way to advertise your shop and get it seen by potential customers, John works on the road and does not have a shop to sell his items, the internet allows him to create his own website where he could sell his tools and get new customers, the internet has a huge range of customers, much higher than he would have without it.

disadvantages: there are many disadvantages of using a lot of ICT in your business, the main thing is the cost; ICT costs a lot and it is advisable that you dont spend too much on it as it could mean you going into debt. There is also the threat of viruses which could destroy all of your files, John will need some virus protection for his PDA and Laptop.

Online entertainment

Online entertainment i have used in last 3 months:
Played on Xbox live
watched videos on youtube
listened to music on websites

Xbox live allows pople around the world to play online together it is targeted at all people who own an xbox and wish to play against people around the world, xbox live gives people who own an xbox a lot more out of their console, without it you will have to play by yourself and might get bored of your games quickly. Not all games are on xbox live but most have leaderboards you can look at. Xbox live fills its potential well and has the potential to be big, it is already well known and has millions of people using it at any one time.

Youtube is a great way to keep up to date with news or even to keep in touch with fans, there are millions of videos added each day, the target audience is everyone because anyone can add a video about anything. Youtube could not exist offline because it needs people to add videos so that people can watch videos. youtube has filled its potential and can only get larger.

I have listened to bands music on their websites and have watched videos of them, this is a great way to advertise music to people because they hear the music and want to buy it so they can listen to it again, this is targeted at young people who want to listen to their favorite bands music. being online helps the band advertise their music more and helps them get sales, it plays a huge part in the money they make.

downloads

my family downloads filsm and music off of the internet, it is cheaper and a lot easier. peopel dont want to go to the shop and buy loads of CD's for high prices when they can just get them off the internet for cheap. the artists and film makers make a lot of money off of downloads because it attracts a higher audience of peopel to buy there items because of the convenience.

Many people choose to download music or films illegally which is basically stealing money from the artists who spend days creating the music or films, the police is trying to crack down on illegel downloads but it is very difficult to do so.

Net Frog

Net frog is a site which helps people who are going to dissect a frog. it has step by step instructions to dissecting frogs and names each part of the frog for revision purposes. this is a very helpful site for students who may have to dissect a frog, i do not think there is a more indepth site for dissecting a frog and i believe this is the best way to revise for this practical.

Online banking

Thses days people can not get the time to go to banks because they work long hours on weekdays and banks are not open on weekends, people still need to sort their bank accounts out so need an easier way to sort it out without having to get time off work. Internet banking means that people can do what they need to do in the bank on the internet. some people may think this isn't safe but the banks organise webpages which only allow you to read them and see what you type in, these secure pages help people keep there information safe while using online banking.

Ebay

people buy and sell things on ebay, ebay is used to sell your items to the highest bidder, you can compete with other people around the world to buy items. if you win an auction you will be sent the item and may be charged for post and packaging which is usually shown in the price. millions of people use ebay each day and loads of items are added each hour.the site is very successful and is a well known name around the world. the target audience is middle aged people who wish to purchase items for cheap or to buy collectables. young people would not usually use ebay as it requires a credit card. older people would usually rather go to the shops to buy their items and would get confused with the internet site.

My Journey with Pterry Ptez

I commence my journey at 12:30pm on the 19th of septemeber.
I first leave my house and get the car to the ferry in gosport. the ferry will cost me £2.40, i know this from past experience.
after i get to portsmouth i have to go to the train station and book my ticket for 12:45pm that goes to waterloo station. i will arrive at 14:23pm and it will cost me £29.40. i got this information from the south west trains website.
I will then need to get off the train and to the underground by 14:31pm when the undergroudn train will arrive and leave, i will reach tottenham court station at 14:37 and will end my journey. i found this information on journey planner.
Overall i believe it will cost less money getting there by car but you should use the train if you wish for a relaxing journey which means you dont have to concentrate so much.

tsunami information passing

the tragic events that happened in 2004 showed the world how far technology has come and how information can be passed sufficiently. A lot of people needed to tell there family and friends that they were still alive and technology was short so people were trying to phone everyone so the phone lines were very slow and people couldnt get through, people could still send text messages and there were thousands of text messages from people how had been affected by the tsunami. people were sending thousands of emails to news feeds after the disaster and people were becoming more involved. People were found stranded and bought to hospitals where there photos were taken and there families could find them. the internet and text services were very helpful compared to the older services, the old services could not kmepp up with the ammount of people using them at the same time where as the new services were ready for loads of people using them.

The digital divide

i have read a post i found on google groups and have realised that it is very easy to find what you want to read about there are many search features which help you find the most recent, the most talked about and many more. The discussions are not very helpful however most of the ones i have found have been very confusing and may only be understood properly by a proffesional.

An E-mail??

Email is shorthand term meaning Electronic Mail. Email much the same as a letter, only that it is exchanged in a different way. The first thing you need to send and recieve emails is an email address. When you create an account with a Internet Service Provider you are usually given an email address to send from and recieve emails. If this isn't the case you can create an email address / account at web sites such as yahoo, hotmail and lycos.
